Last Sunday's sun was so persistent, so forceful, that I thought it would last, and that after a couple of grey and drizzly Gala days, at least this year we'd have sunshine for the Big Meeting (tomorrow).

Since then we have had a week of mildly sunny weather interspersed with dramatic downpours: blue skies clouding beyond grey to almost black, an abrupt cloudburst gradually slowing and the sun returning.

The river, which had been very low, is looking a bit healthier: this morning a family of ducks were lining up to take advantage, seven little fluffy ducklings nibbling at something (I'd rather not try to imagine what) along the retaining wall, while the swallows swooped to and fro above them. Eventually mother chivvied them out into midstream, first one, then another, then a group of three or four, one more putting on a burst of speed to catch up and finally the last straggler.

Right now the rain is tapping on my skylight, and there is a rainbow over - well, over the cathedral, although the sky is still dark enough that my view of the crossing tower is obscured. I'm sure it's still there, though.
