Fox and Parrot Wood in Co. Durham is a patch of forest planted on reclaimed land which had been opencast. We assumed that it took its name from a pub, but the Woodland Trust claim it was named by local people in memory of Dr Fox of Craghead, who had a parrot. Hmm...

A wooden seat in a clearing in the wood has been carved with the names of seams in the local mines:
Shield Row
Five Quarter
Main Seam
Maudlin
Low Main
Brass Thill
Hutton
Harvey
Tilly
Busty
Brockwell
