Earlier this week, I had the bright idea of listening to the CD [livejournal.com profile] samarcand had made for me of Rubber Folk, in which a variety of folk performers cover all the songs from the Beatles' Rubber Soul album. And since all I wanted to do was play the disk from end to end, I put it into the hard-disk recorder / CD/ DVD player, and pressed play.

And then I went downstairs to listen through the kitchen speakers while I made dinner, and realised that what I was hearing was a programme about Loudon Wainright III. Which was odd, but quite interesting.

I thought, "Better tell [livejournal.com profile] samarcand about that", but before I remembered to do so, I mentioned it to [livejournal.com profile] durham_rambler, who pointed out that since his last reorganisation of the hard disk, it just so happened that the last item on it was a programme about Loudon Wainright III. Possibly this was no coincidence, but the machine deciding that I didn't really want to listen to a silly old record, what I really wanted was to hear (the soundtrack of) a programme from its magical store.

This evening I tested this theory by placing the CD in the hard-disk recorder / CD/ DVD player and using the television to find and play it. Which worked fine, and I enjoyed listening to the CD - some good people being predictably good, and a couple of pleasant surprises - put the pie in the oven and went to shut down the player, only to realise that the television was now showing The Avengers, and I'd managed to prevent the timed recording from operating.

One step forward, one back, then.

Not-quite-adjacent on my friends page today are [livejournal.com profile] sartorias talking about her discomfort over the current "ask me a question" meme, and [livejournal.com profile] kythiaranos talking about how much she likes it. That's exactly my understanding of what a meme is, a topic or image that dances through our conversations...
Which is much more interesting than my opinions on this particular meme )
