We thought we had it all worked out so neatly: a busy week, and visitors expected today, so we'd need to go shopping. Why not combine that with a morning swim at Chester-le-Street, breakfast at Tesco's there, try the new Farmers' Market at Chester, then pick up any extras we needed at Tesco's.

First glitch, a minor one: we decided to go to see La Vie en Rose yesterday evening, so it wouldn't be a very early night - but no reason why it should be a very late one, either. The film: well, the film was very much as predicted. I was happy to sit in a comfortable seat for a couple of hours while people talked - and sang - French to me, but don't take this as a recommendation of the movie. And we arrived home about eleven to find a message from a client who was having problems, could we help? Poked at the problem, decided no, we couldn't, and went to bed.*

Second glitch: up early, and arrived at the pool to find a member of staff lurking outside to warn off would-be swimmers - a chlorine pump was broken, and the pool was closed. In our pre-caffeine morning state, it took us a while to respond to this one, but eventually we worked it out: this is the time to try Stanley pool, about which we hear good things from fellow-swimmers. Not bad: new pool, friendly staff, changing facilities comfortable (despite being mixed, and makes me more hopeful about Durham's new pool), would go again. Then back to Chester-le-Street in search of breakfast.

Third glitch: Chester-le-Street Tesco's has no café. It doesn't have much, actually, but we had to exhaust the charms of the Farmers' Market (stalls essentially a subset of those who come to Durham, breakfast at the hot-dog van in the market) before we found that out. I'm not being precious about not having a choice of organic goat's cheese, here (camembert will do nicely) but I put my food down at the absence of grapefruit juice... So we came back to Durham and went to Sainsbury's instead.

I still feel a coffee or two behind the day, but I feel much better for having got that off my chest. And now, onward and upward!
