Naturally, it's when you're expecting guests (including overnight guests you've never met before) and are in a whirl of emergency cleaning so as not to disgrace yourself utterly - that's when you discover that your drains are blocked (all that soapy water...).

Fortunately the vacuum cleaner still works.

Oh! Oh! I know the answer to this one!
*waves hand in the air*

Last night I was watching How Clean Is Your House? for the very first time... which I think is designed to make everyone feel better about their own messy homes. And one of the things Kim did was unblock a YEARS-old plugged bathroom sink!

Lots of baking soda (soda bicarb?), a big glug of vinegar to activate it, and then the plunger applied with vigour.

I was *so* impressed!

Caustic soda wil also do the trick, but handle it with care.

I wasn't going to say that, though, I was going to blink my eyes innocently and ask how one used a vaccuum claner to sort out drains.

For a moment, I wondered if you were going to use the vacuum on the drains. :-) Good luck with the guests and the housework.
