At a guess, because the exhibition - series of 42 puffins - is temporary; it will be reomived (and auctioned) later this autumn.

Or maybe they were just afraid of its claws?

When we were in Edinburgh in August there were random giraffes stationed throughout the city, painted in various colours. The one in front of our flat was decorated in blue and red, and had gold wings. We decided that it must be an Assyrian giraffe. However when we finally looked at the plinth it said it was a Superman giraffe. I have no idea how we were supposed to have worked that out.

Superman does not have gold wings (or any other kind).

But it sounds as if your giraffes and our puffins are related - at other times I have also seen elephants and Paddington bears.
