Recluttering

It was an effort to tidy the house ahead of the party - to clear tables, and remove piles of books from chairs, and try to find homes for things so that they could be put away, and - well, all that and more. But there was a real sense of achievement when it was done. And when everyone had gone, and we were slumped in front of the television, durham_rambler looked around the room, and said how good it looked, and I agreed with him.

But it can't last. The things - the useful boxes, the unread magazines, the important papers - that I hid in the cellar, on top of the chest freezer, had to be moved so that I could get something out of the freezer. The notebook computer has returned to the kitchen chair where it spends most of its time, because the kitchen is where I mostly use it (where I am, in fact, using it now). I have re-erected the ironing board in front of the television.

Still, if we've done it once, we can do it again. If/when we have to.

I keep a fairly tidy house because I'm allergic to clutter, but when it's time to either give a party, have houseguests or go away on a vacation it sure doesn't seem like it. I've spent all of today cleaning my house, throwing things out, organizing this and that, and asking myself why I still haven't gotten to grips with the small bookcase that has nothing I need in it yet is completely full of stuff.

I have seen your house: it is much, much tidier than mine! And I know, because you post about it, that you clear out from time to time, which I don't.

But it's good to be reminded that we all have targets that we fail to reach.

Talking last night to someone who brought two small children to the party - they were apparently very impressed by the house, and want one just like it: so, yeah, not quite as appallong as I think!
