Music meme
I'm aware that I haven't posted much lately. I haven't gone away, I'm still here, nibbling away at a Post in Progress (holiday pictures, very self-indulgent) and reading what other people are posting. To prove it, look! a meme! I read
sovay's version first, then
asakiyume posted a version - and now, here's mine.
sovay suggests that the idea is just to write down the first thing you think of, which I find impossible: I freeze, and can't think of anything at all. Nonetheless, I take it as permission not to over-think: here is a list, another moment would surely produce another one:

A Place: Peter Maxwell Davies, Farewell to Stromness (I have posted about this before.)
A Food: Cyril Tawney, Chicken on a Raft (I can't find the man himself, so here's the Young Tradition)
A Drink: Well, you know me: What I want is a proper cup of coffee (made in a proper copper coffee pot). I learned it from the Bears, and if I could, I would point to their version - but failing that, at least this gives you a tune to accompany those words. The Andrews Sisters - who knew?
Animal: Martin Simpson, The Granemore Hare (he used to play this as an instrumental, and that's how I think of it - but the song's fine too.)
A Number: What, just one number? My mind's gone blank on this one, and all I can think of are counting songs. So how about Red Fly the banners, O? (Not exactly as i know it, but close...)
Boy's Name: Martin Said to His Man (so many ballads are known by the name of the hero, but none of them felt like what I wanted; then, YouTube followed Maddy Prior's Doffin' Mistress with this version, and I just thought: yes!.
Girl's Name: Sovay, of course. Martin Carthy (of course) with bonus Swarbrick.
Profession: Doffin' Mistress (Silly Sisters / Maddy Prior and June Tabor)
A Vehicle: Canoe - two vehicles for the price of one from Pete Atkin and Clive James.
