Curiously we went to see Matthew Bourne's Cinderella last week. It's set during the 2nd World War (when it was in fact written) and uses Prokofiev's music to great effect. It does away with the twinkly schmalz (which doubtless audiences needed in the war) and replaces magic with explosions. The recognition scene takes place in a hospital where Cinderella and the hero have been taken after being bombed out in the blitz, and he is treated with electroshock therapy. I thought it was really interesting.
