I suspect I need to read it alone, not as part of a series. I read the whole series in a single day, and so I saw all the weaknesses and, I suspect, didn't appreciate the strengths. This is one reason I love Wynne-Jones' writing - just when I think I have it pinned down, I am forced to rethink and yet it looks so simple and clear.
