Inutilities

We've been putting off finding the paperwork and ringing British Gas to say "Er, isn't our boiler due an annual service (as per our maintenance contract with you)?" But we've also been noticing intermittently that the hot water isn't very hot, or the house isn't as warm as it should be. Yesterday morning these two things converged on the realisation that we had no heating and no hot water, because the boiler wasn't working.

We had accomplished one thing the previous day which we had also been putting off: we had reached a decision about upgrading our broadband connection, and phoned BT to implement it. So naturally, when we went to call British Gas, the phone had been cut off.

Luckily, they hadn't disconnected the other line, and we were able to get the phone reconnected in time to receive [livejournal.com profile] desperance's message that his internet was down.

That's three, OK? Stop now.

It's not disastrous. British gas sent out two engineers, who put a yellow sticker on the boiler telling us not to use it, and promised that someone would be out with the necessary part on Monday. We still have an electric heater, [livejournal.com profile] durham_rambler has laid a fire in the sitting room, the shower has an independent water heater, the threatened cold snap has not yet materialised. There's no sign of the snow which we thought might make it difficult to reach today's party in Northumberland - it wasn't even really cold enough to chill the cava (yes, we are still working through last week's leftovers) which we put in the car overnight to take with us.
