They Did Not Starve

Woman to man carrying Barnsley Miner's Wives' banner: But you're not a miner's wife. Where are the miners' wives?

Man carrying banner: The bosses are in front of the banner.

Quite right too.

Gala Day!! I've been thinking of you guys today. How did it all go? I have such memories. J and I were going to ring Mac&Margaret tomorrow as part of our regular chatting with them (we ring them c. once a month) and I was going to ask if they got out to enjoy it.

It looks like, from your photo, that they found the requisite virgins to sacrifice this year to keep the weather fine...

I'm also guessing, from the wee bit of scenery I can see around the banner, that you were on Elvet bridge, rather than Framwellgate. At the end near the Swan and 3 Cyggies, near the Continental Cafe and just near the bead store (if it's still there) and Emilio's (which isn't still there but was). Am I right?

As a side note, I showed this photo to J without scrolling down to show him my guess re: the location of the shot. And he came up with the exact same answer. We're differing by maybe 100 yds; I'm saying that they are one end of the bridge, the end near the pub, and he is saying they are on the end closer to the town center. New Elvet is behind the bannermen.

Please to settle our debate?

Weather was indeed brilliant - hot and bright and just a slight breeze.

And perhaps this (same banner, other side) will answer your question:

Hee! It looks like Jonathan and I were spot on. Though we still can't tell just how far along the bridge the banner was standing.

I'm charmed and reassured that both J and I still know Durham so well that we were able to nail the location of the banner from the somewhat limited context.

I'm the granddaughter of colliers on both sides of the family (Kent Area NUM) and was involved in the WSG's during the '84 strike. One side of the family originated in the north east, so I love this! :o)

There is much here about which I am profoundly ambivalent - too much to go into here. But the Big Meeting is a wonderful event.

I'm glad you like it; there are more photos in my Flickr account (http://www.flickr.com/photos/she_who_must/) (and more to sort and post...)
